Ternand
Perched in the southern Beaujolais, 30 minutes from Lyon, Ternand is the second village in the Rhône department to be awarded the "Petites cités de Caractère" label.
This small village nestled on a rocky promontory is a listed historic monument. You will fall under the charm of its small golden stone streets and the beauty of its ochre-coloured houses. Classified as a Geopark Beaujolais site, it is divided into two distinct parts: the "modern" part in the Azergues valley and the "old town" on its rocky spur, for a dive into the history of the Beaujolais. The visit of the village of Ternand can be done by taking the covered way. In the middle of your walk, you will find the remains of the castle and its 12th century keep, which look out over the vineyards surrounding the village. Stop off at the 15th century church of the Nativity of St John the Baptist and its crypt. At the top of the village, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Beaujolais mountains and the Azergues Valley. You can also take the Ronzière circuit, which will help you discover the fortified medieval village and its exceptional heritage.
